Beatitudes

A remarkable book which uses the Beatitudes as a starting point for reflection on what it means to be a follower of Christ. “We must simply receive the kingdom of God like little children,” the author says. “And little children are precisely those who have not done anything. The ancient world was not sentimental about children and had no illusions about any pretended innate goodness in them. The Lord is not suggesting that heaven is a great playground for Arcadian infants. The children are our model because they have no claim on heaven. If they are close to God it is because they are incompetent, not because they are innocent.”
